What's New for 2024?

BMW has refreshed the X5's exterior for 2024, with updates including a revised front grille, bumper, headlamps, taillamps, and wheel designs. The top-spec M60i model features gloss-black exterior accents, quad tailpipes, and an M logo in the grille. Both the turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six and the twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 engines now incorporate a new 48-volt hybrid system, boosting the six-cylinder's output to 375 horsepower. The M60i model retains its horsepower rating of 523.

The xDrive45e plug-in hybrid has been replaced by the more powerful xDrive50e, offering 94 additional horsepower and 10 more miles of electric-only driving range, totaling 483 horsepower and 40 miles of EV driving. The X5 also receives a new curved infotainment display and the latest iDrive 8 software interface, with an upcoming update to iDrive 8.5 in summer 2023. Additionally, the X5 now offers the Highway Assistant hands-free driving feature, previously introduced in the new 7-series luxury sedan.

Range, Charging, and Battery Life


The xDrive50e model comes with a standard 25.7-kWh battery pack, offering up to 40 miles of electric-only driving. The X5 can reach speeds of up to 84 mph using only the battery. The battery pack can be charged at home using 110-volt or 220-volt outlets, as well as at public charging stations.

Infotainment and Connectivity


Stepping into the X5's cabin reveals a striking curved display wall, spanning two-thirds of the dashboard. Behind the wheel, a 12.3-inch screen serves as a gauge display, while a larger 14.9-inch touchscreen grants access to BMW's iDrive infotainment interface. While the EPA has not released official fuel economy estimates for the xDrive50e plug-in hybrid, the rear-wheel drive sDrive40i and all-wheel drive xDrive40i models are rated at 23 mpg city and 27 mpg highway. The V-8–powered M60i model is expected to achieve 17 mpg city and 22 mpg highway. Real-world fuel efficiency will be further evaluated through our 75-mph highway fuel economy test route.
