The 2024 BMW X5 combines the best traits of sporty and luxury SUVs to create a truly agreeable and luxurious middle ground. This versatile vehicle caters to a wide range of drivers with its trio of powertrain options: a smooth inline-six, a commanding twin-turbo V-8, and an eco-friendly plug-in hybrid. Inside the cabin, premium materials abound, and the integration of clever technology features, such as the sleek curved digital display that stretches across the dashboard, further enhances the luxury experience. With its well-rounded appeal, the X5 remains a top choice among mid-size crossovers.

What's New for 2024?

BMW has refreshed the X5's exterior for 2024, with updates including a revised front grille, bumper, headlamps, taillamps, and wheel designs. The top-spec M60i model features gloss-black exterior accents, quad tailpipes, and an M logo in the grille. Both the turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six and the twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 engines now incorporate a new 48-volt hybrid system, boosting the six-cylinder's output to 375 horsepower. The M60i model retains its horsepower rating of 523.

The xDrive45e plug-in hybrid has been replaced by the more powerful xDrive50e, offering 94 additional horsepower and 10 more miles of electric-only driving range, totaling 483 horsepower and 40 miles of EV driving. The X5 also receives a new curved infotainment display and the latest iDrive 8 software interface, with an upcoming update to iDrive 8.5 in summer 2023. Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

While the EPA has not released official fuel economy estimates for the xDrive50e plug-in hybrid, the rear-wheel drive sDrive40i and all-wheel drive xDrive40i models are rated at 23 mpg city and 27 mpg highway. The V-8–powered M60i model is expected to achieve 17 mpg city and 22 mpg highway. Real-world fuel efficiency will be further evaluated through our 75-mph highway fuel economy test route.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The X5 offers generous interior space for both the first and second rows, although the optional third row is more suitable for children. The cabin of the X5 is adorned with high-quality materials, and there are plenty of charging points for devices. Depending on the chosen options, a multitude of luxury features can be added, enhancing the overall experience. Standard features include power-adjustable front seats with driver memory, a power-adjustable steering column, heated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, a power rear liftgate, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and customizable ambient lighting. Additional luxurious touches such as massaging seats, remote start, soft-close doors, acoustic glass, a leather dashboard, and heated front armrests and steering wheel can elevate the X5 to the level of a high-end luxury SUV, albeit with an increased cost. For those seeking exceptional audio quality, an optional Bowers & Wilkins surround-sound audio system with diamond-domed tweeters is available. When it comes to cargo space, the X5 doesn't disappoint. With the rear seats in use, it comfortably accommodates 11 carry-on suitcases, and with the rear seats folded, that number increases to 26.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The 2024 X5 is available with three distinct powertrains. The sDrive40i and xDrive40i models are equipped with a 375-horsepower turbocharged inline-six.
