The 2027 BMW X5 opens a new chapter for the vehicle that created the Sports Activity Vehicle segment back in 1999. Exterior
Every 2027 X5 shares a taller, more upright front end that gives the SAV a heavier, more grounded look than the outgoing model. A larger matte-finish BMW badge sits above a front apron that changes by powertrain: combustion and plug-in hybrid models use horizontal air intakes, while the iX5 gets a smoother, continuous apron. The vertically aligned BMW kidney grille stays lit day and night as part of a double-X light icon that folds the headlights, running lights, side lights, and turn signals into one unit. Buyers who want a sportier look can add the M Sport Package or step up to the M Sport Pro Package for red M Sport brakes and added black trim.
From the side, the X5 keeps a clean, single-piece look thanks to hidden window seals and new BMW Winglet door handles built into the B- and C-pillars, which work with the available power-operated doors and standard Soft Close feature. Sharp wheel arches and standard matte black side skirts frame wheels ranging from 21-inch standard units up to 23-inch wheels — a first for the X5. Inside, the 2027 X5 raises the driver’s seating position and simplifies the dashboard around BMW Panoramic iDrive. Below the dash, a backlit accent strip wraps from door to door, with colour and brightness that adjust automatically or manually. Standard heated sports seats come in Veganza upholstery in Black or Copper Brown, while the optional Premium Package adds massage function, ventilation, and four-way lumbar support. The 40:20:40 split-folding rear seats include a through-loading system, and families can add the optional 14.6-inch BMW Passenger Display for front-seat video streaming.

Powertrain
The X5 40 xDrive uses BMW’s 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder engine, producing 394 horsepower and 428 lb-ft of torque thanks to a new turbocharger. Paired with an eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission, it reaches 100 km/h from a standing start in 5.3 seconds and tops out at an electronically limited 250 km/h. A 48V mild hybrid system adds up to 17 horsepower and 148 lb-ft of torque during acceleration.
The X5 50e xDrive plug-in hybrid pairs the six-cylinder engine with a 194-horsepower electric motor for a total system output of 483 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque, with an estimated all-electric range of up to 70 kilometres. The iX5 60 xDrive, the first fully electric X5, uses a rear motor producing 325 horsepower and a front motor adding 245 horsepower for a total system output of 570 horsepower and 593 lb-ft of torque. Built on BMW’s 800-volt Gen6 architecture, the iX5 has an estimated range of up to 700 kilometres (preliminary, based on BMW AG testing using EPA procedures) and supports bidirectional charging.
Technology
BMW Panoramic iDrive runs on BMW Operating System X, a software-defined platform that keeps the vehicle updated over time. Up to seven driver profiles can be saved through the BMW ID. The enhanced BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant responds to natural speech after the “Hey BMW” prompt, and Amazon’s Alexa+ AI technology is expected to expand its capabilities in Canada in 2027. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard, and BMW Digital Key Plus turns a compatible smartphone into the vehicle key.
Driver assistance follows BMW’s Symbiotic Drive philosophy. Standard Driving Assistant Plus manages speed, following distance, and lane centring, while the optional Highway Assistant allows hands-free driving on approved highways up to 130 km/h.
