BMW has expanded its electrified vehicle lineup with the introduction of the 2025 BMW i5 xDrive40, alongside the BMW 550e xDrive plug-in hybrid. These two models join the all-new i5 electric midsize sedan and redesigned BMW 5 Series, respectively, delivering unique characteristics that will surpass the expectations of their future owners.
The 2025 BMW i5 xDrive40: A New Era of Electrified Driving
The BMW i5 xDrive40 represents a new, more accessible addition to the electric i5 range, previously only available in the M60 xDrive variant. Priced starting at $83,700 CAD, the i5 xDrive40 delivers the refinement, comfort, and technology buyers expect from a midsize sedan while the fully electric powertrain delivers impressive performance combined with ample range.
Performance and Technology
Equipped with an 84.3 kWh high-voltage battery, the i5 xDrive40 offers an estimated range of up to 428 kilometres. The vehicle features BMW's latest eDrive technology, comprising two electric motors that deliver a combined output of 389 horsepower and 435 lb-ft of torque. This setup allows the sedan to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.4 seconds, with a top speed of 210 km/h.
Charging and Efficiency
The i5 xDrive40's charging capabilities are equally impressive. When connected to a DC fast charger, its battery can be charged from 10% to 80% in approximately 30 minutes, thanks to a charging rate of up to 205 kW.
Production and Availability
Set to begin production in March 2024 at BMW Group’s Plant Dingolfing, the BMW i5 xDrive40 adds a more accessible option in the i5 lineup, offering a balance of performance and luxury with exceptional electric capability.
The BMW 550e xDrive Plug-in Hybrid: Power Meets Efficiency
Alongside the i5 xDrive40, BMW also announced the BMW 550e xDrive plug-in hybrid, with a starting price of $84,200 CAD. This model combines the efficiency of electric drive with the power of a traditional combustion engine.
Hybrid Powertrain
The 550e xDrive features a 19-kWh high-voltage battery and an in-line six-cylinder gasoline engine from BMW's Efficient Dynamics modular generation. This combination, integrated into the 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission, provides an estimated system output of 483 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque.
Performance and Capabilities
The 550e xDrive showcases exceptional performance, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds and reaching a top speed of 250 km/h. In electric mode, it can achieve a top speed of 140 km/h, offering a versatile driving experience.
Production Plans
Production for the 550e xDrive is scheduled to begin in July 2024 at the same Dingolfing plant with first delivers coming in the last quarter of the year.
