The i5 employs a high-voltage battery incorporating the latest fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology. This low-profile battery, fitted into the BMW i5's underbody, doesn’t intrude inside meaning that the electric i5 offers identical passenger space compared to combustion engine variants. With a usable energy content of 81.2 kWh, combined with highly efficient electric motors, the BMW i5 promises long-distance journey capabilities. Charging is convenient and efficient, with a Combined Charging Unit allowing Level 2 AC charging up to 9.6 kW, and DC fast-charging up to 205 kW, allowing for 10% to 80% charge in about 30 minutes.
Energy Management and Charging Efficiency
The new MAX RANGE function in the i5 maximises the range by restricting power output and top speed and scaling back comfort functions. The latest charging software optimises charging efficiency by continuously reducing charging power as the battery charge level increases. Moreover, the waste heat generated by the electric motors is utilised to control the high-voltage battery's temperature, reducing the energy required for battery preheating.
