BMW’s new 2022 electric vehicle lineup
The brand is renewing its electric vehicle lineup for 2022 and welcomes two new models: the i4 sedan and the iX SUV. BMW intends to cover all fronts.
THE BMW i4 SEDAN 2022
The BMW i4 sedan is 100% electric. Expected to be a direct competitor to the Tesla Model 3, this sports coupe features a sloping roof and an oversized grille to optimize air intake. The i4 also features a stretched headlamp unit for an edgy front end. As for the bodywork, it follows the usual curved lines of the German brand, favoring the aerodynamics of the tank.
As for the interior, the sedan has a futuristic interior. The large dashboard is made up of a pair of screens, 12.3 and 14.9 inches. In terms of connectivity, the BMW i4 is equipped with Android auto and Apple CarPlay. It also features the 8th generation iDrive system, BMW’s intelligent digital assistant.
The new sedan is available in two models: i4 eDrive40 and i4 M50.
BMW i4 eDrive40
The i4 eDrive40 has rear-wheel drive. It has a single electric motor at the rear delivering 335 horsepower , going from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.7 s The battery has a capacity of 83.9 kilowatt hours, 81.5 of which are usable. The whole promises a range of around 475 km. The entry price for this entry-level model starts at $54,990.
BMW i4 M50
Unlike the eDrive40, the i4 M50 has a second engine in the front. Its construction makes it a 4-wheel drive, delivering 536 horsepower from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds. On the other hand, it is equipped with the same battery as the eDrive40. This promises a range of 385 km. Its starting $72,990.
THE BMW iX 2022
The German manufacturer is entering the electric SUV category with its all-new iX model. The car offers a modern and innovative design. The exterior is created from a unibody structure giving it exceptional aerodynamics. This SUV has a coefficient of drag of 0.25, comparable to the i4 M50. The iX promises a rugged look. Its unique front end features a vertically stretched grille and a very narrow headlamp unit never seen before.
Like the i4, the iX’s flat dashboard features the same futuristic dual Curved Display. It also features the same iDrive system, as well as Android auto and Apple CarPlay. All this in a modern cabin with an impressive panoramic roof, the largest ever installed in a BMW.
The iX xDrive 50 is a 4-wheel drive tank offering exceptional performance for a starting price of $89,990. It features two electric motors that deliver 516 horsepower, allowing it to go from 0 to 100 km in 4.6 s. Although the architecture is similar to the i4 model, the battery is upgraded here for better capacity (106.3 usable kilowatt hours). The expected range is 475 km.
